A Quick guide to Sassari car hire in Italy

Sassari is the second city of Sardinia regarding the number of inhabitants and the third municipality after Roma and Ravenna regarding the territorial extension. The city is situated on the limestone table-land tilted towards the Golf of Asinara and is surrounded by the hilly area on the south-East part and a vast plain area called “Nura” on the north-west side.

The coastline is long for 32 km, high, jagged and sandy, reach of beautiful beaches as Platamona, Fiume Santo, Argentiera, or Porto Ferro. The climate is maritime, mild and temperate. The most important monumental buildings are: San Nicola Church, Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo Giordano, Piazza Italia, Rosello Fountain. The San Nicola Church dominates the old town with an impressive baroque front with martyrs statues in niches.

There is a bell tower beside the church with the internal part from XIII century in gothic style and the external one constructed in XVII century. Among the numerous works of art there are: a marble alter from the half of XIX century, Madonna del Bosco painted in XIV century and a Spanish crucifix from XVIII century, the Mausoleum of Placido Benedetto di Savoia – count of Moriana, brother of Vittorio Emmanuele I and Carlo Felice – died in Sassari in 1802.

Palazzo Ducale was built in the end of XVIII and the beginning of XIX century by Antonio Manca, the marquise of Mores and duke of Asinara, probably according to Carlo Valino project. In 1900 the palace was purchased by the municipal administration and nowadays there is a town hall there. The Palazzo Giordano was constructed in 1878 and it is an actual headquarters of Banco di Napoli. Beautiful rooms have been decorated by Gugliemo Bilancioni.
