Melbourne is the capital of Victoria, and is Australias second-largest city. European settlement of the area began in 1835, through the efforts of John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner, eventually resulting in its designation Port Phillip District of New South Wales. Growth was slow until the discovery of gold to the north-west, in and around Ballarat and Clunes in 1851.
This resulted in a rapid development and population growth, and a change in status to become the colony of Victoria, with Melbourne installed as its capital. In fact the growth was so great that until 1911 Melbourne was Australias most populous city, and between Federation in 1901 and the completion of Canberras construction in 1927 it housed the Federal Government. According to the 2001 Census the population of Melbourne was almost 3,400,000.
The average temperature in winter ranges from 6 to 13 degrees Celsius, in summer 15 to 27. The climate does of course vary over the greater metropolitan area, and the temperature range in the CBD can fall below minus 2 degrees Celsius in the winter and exceed 37 degrees Celsius in the summer.
The city centre is laid out in a simple grid pattern, the long, wide north-south streets gently sloping down to the Yarra River, crossed by a mix of narrow lanes and the main shopping streets such as Bourke and Collins Streets. The CBD is easily navigable by foot, and if a rest is needed after a session of sightseeing or shopping there are numerous parks nearby, such as the Royal Botanical Gardens, Fitzroy Gardens and Carlton Gardens.
Alternatively, you can take one of Melbournes signature attractions, a tram. The burgundy-coloured City Circle tram is free, and is a good way to get your bearings as well as explore the inner-city, while for those wanting to go further afield the tram network extends about 15 kilometres into the Melbourne suburbs.
Melbourne is a modern, cosmopolitan city, but has probably more than any other Australian city retained a strong architectural link to its past. The citys key heritage sites can be seen on the Golden Mile Heritage Trail, a self-guided walk tracing Melbournes development from 1835 to 1901. The trail is signposted, with a souvenir brochure available to help you keep on the trail.
