Alcamo is an important agricultural and industrial centre and rises at the foot of the Mount Bonifato. It is one of the biggest Sicilian centre for the wine-trade. In its agricultural products are present olives, corn, cereals, melons, table and wine grapes. Cattle and sheep breedings are present too.
The name of Alcamo is of Arabic origin, Manzil Alqamah, (Alqamah is the name of a very poisonous water-melon, Manzil means hamet-station.)
The town rose in the XII century along the trade way that from Palermo lead to the coast. The development of the town, between the XV and the XVII centuries, is due to the settlement of numerous religious groups which drive the expansion beyond the town-walls. Alcamo belonged to the Earls of Modica till the beginning of the XIX century.
In the monumental field the Castle of the Earls of Modica stands out. It was built in the XIV century, on a rhomboidal plan, with four towers; two are quadrangular, two are cylindrical. Still now it is possible to find in the northern part the mullioned window in the Gothic style. Inside the Cathedral Church there are important works of art like those made by Gagini and Serpotta and like the frescos by G. Borremans. It is possible to find remains of a thermal building of the XIV century, the fontanazza, on the next Mount Bonifato.
